The Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP)

The Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) at New York University (NYU) is a state-funded innovative pre-college enrichment program for talented and motivated African American, Hispanic/Latino, Alaskan Native or American Indian and economically disadvantaged White or Asian middle and high school students. Our goal is to:

  • prepare our students to be competitive so that they are accepted into a selective college of their choice
  • encourage and increase the number of historically under-represented minority groups in the science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) careers, health-related fields and licensed professions.

Building Excellence in Science and Technology (BEST)

The Building Excellence in Science and Technology Program (BEST) is a joint program with NYU STEP, pursuing the same mission and serving the same student population— African American, Hispanic/Latino, Alaskan Native or American Indian; and economically disadvantaged White or Asian students. However, the BEST program is specifically designed to serve students attending middle school and high school students in Community School District 13 located in Brooklyn, New York. If you attend school in Brooklyn, NY and are unsure if you are a BEST student please check here for an overview of the district and to search to see if your school is a District 13 school. For your reference, most of our current BEST students attend the following schools—Brooklyn Technical High School, Benjamin Banneker Academy, and Bedford Academy.
